Bedding Hits All Zones.

Additionally, many manufacturers have developed mattress units with varying "zones" of support. The following are previews of some of the new bedding products and features to be introduced at the October International Home Furnishings Market here.

Englander will be presenting new items in each of its three product lines: Laytex, Lady Englander and 21st Century. Featured prominently in its showroom will be a plush jumbo pillowtop version of Laytex, made of 100 percent natural latex. Also new will be a combination of toppers on the heavy wire unit featured in the flagship line, Lady Englander, and an improved version of the 21st Century line.

IBC will introduce a bedding concept called Sleep Dynamics combining individual pocketed springs, NASA-developed Thermal Memory Foam and satin terry-cloth covering.

King Koil introduces the Posture Bond Performa Collection, a multiple-zoned support sleep system available in three styles. The upper two models feature a sculpted layer of high-density foam that provides four different levels of firmness in seven zones. The entry-level model offers the company's ChiroZone System, a five-zone foam layer. The Posture Bond Performa Collection also features the Chiro-Tech spring system, Chiro-Span Posturization to add spring support in the center third of the mattress, and Flex Edge Plus steel double-edge supports and T-Guard center edge supports. The collection starts at $599 in queen size.

Kingsdown introduces "Thistle," a new bedding line offering two styles: Heather Glenn and Heather Moor. Both styles are hand tailored and feature new fabrics, a new unit construction in the mattress and a full-coil box spring. Heather Moor, which retails for approximately $5,000 for queen size, has more fiber layers and different fabrics than the Heather Glenn, which retails for about $3,000 for queen size.

New Energy emphasizes comfort in its new program of alternative sleep products. The new line, called Sensa, features interchangeable inserts of latex, foam coil, convoluted foam and Aqua Pads and will be available in SensaFirm and SensaTive models. Also new will be three pillowtop, fluid support beds under the name Lumbarpedic and several new futon frames and mattresses.

The newest bedding program from Park Place is Country Nights, offering four styles with retail prices between $399 to $999 in queen size. The mattress features a Lura-Flex offset innerspring mattress with models offering up to 660 coils. The mattresses are merchandised in a country music theme with models featuring ticking in cowboy boots and hats and a pillowtop model featuring a tack-and-jump musical note pattern. Country music singer Holly Dunn and the Country Nights trailer are part of the line's promotions.

Sealy introduces the Posturepedic Crown Jewel line, an ultrapremium line designed to combine back support, stylish presentation, comfort and performance. The Crown Jewel styles will include a new edge support system and a high-end upholstery look in the ticking and tailoring.

In addition, five new Posturepedic models will be introduced. The new models hit $599 and $799 price points, but feature components that traditionally have been found on higher-priced Posturepedic models.

Sealy will also introduce a new lineup of adjustable beds, including promotional as well as new Posturepedic models and multiple foundation options.

Serta will launch a new "Best of Best" collection, the Perfect Night collection. The Perfect Night collection, positioned above Serta's Perfect Sleeper line, features a Triple Beam foundation with extra steel support elements (ModuCoils) in the center third of the foundation.

The innerspring unit features 48 extra Posture Spirals (a total of 752) along the sides of the mattress unit. An enhanced upholstery layer includes a patent-pending foam design to provide extra support to the edge of the mattress. Both plush and firm versions feature a drop skirt treatment with kick pleats at the corners, intended to give a high-end upholstery look. The Perfect Night is expected to retail up to $2,499.

Serta has also redesigned its entire Perfect Sleeper line for 1997.

The new models all incorporate the Triple Beam and the Perimeter Edge designs and all upper-level innerspring units using 704 Posture Spirals now feature increased wire gauge for extra strength. The new Perfect Sleeper line is expected to retail between $399 and $1,499 in queen size.

Simmons is introducing a redesigned BackCare line that incorporates its five-zoned support system into every element of the bed. The quilt layer is zoned by varying the quilting stitch pattern, and the upholstery in BackCare Ultimate uses patented five-zone anatomic foam.

Innersprings are now zoned with 50 percent more tempered steel in the helical wire under the support zones, while foundations are zoned using a mixture of PowerFlex torsion bars and formed steel.

In an alliance with Price Manufacturing Inc., Simmons will also present its new air mattress, in both premium and pillowtop styles, designed to offer total body support. The air mattress also features a handheld control for customized firmness and dual adjustability, allowing different comfort preferences for each side of the bed.

Spring Air's 1997 Back Supporter line now features a "7-5-3" zoned system, with seven support zones in the comfort options level, five support zones in the innerspring unit level and three durability zones in the foundation level. The new comfort layer is available in zoned Conforma Foam or zoned, convoluted Conforma Latex.

Select models of the 1997 Back Supporter line will also feature the "EuroHandle," a patented handle built right into the border of the mattress.

Springwall will introduce three new sets in its premium Chiropractic line. Marketed as the Chiropractic Value Collection, the new line is available in Extra Firm and Luxury Firm (both retailing for $399 for queen size) and Pillow Top (retailing for $499 for queen).The 532 coil collection is intended to provide chiropractic benefits to as many people as possible, according to Dick Mankamyer, vice president, sales and marketing.
