Aren't the "islands" that China is building in the South China Sea subject to a risk of being wiped out by typhoons?
At least, the security of these islands is better than the U.S. aircraft carrier
------
Why did Obama allow China to militarize the islands in the South China Sea?
Its simple formula. The US had pivoted to Asia pacific, that have nothing for the US interest here. The US only wants hegemony power in every part of the globe. So happen China is the only countries stand up to stop bully and peace for the world.

What evidence does China offer to substantiate its claims of sovereignty in the South China Sea?
It is as legitimate as any of the nations around the area's claims, no more no less. Most of those little rocks are occupied by Vietnam (among other nations). Some of the nations try to enlarge those rocks (albeit on small scales) and others do not like those activities. China did not like this either so she went around to tell them to stop. Nobody paid attention. Then China said, alright, you want to play this game? Let me show you how to do it right and went ahead and built a yuuuuge island out a few pieces of rocks that were barely above water.Everyone cried foul and brought in the attention of the self-appointed world police, the US and her navy patrol to assert freedom of navigation. China faked a few protests and sent in a few ships herself. In time everyone will forget it.The long term effect is that nobody will play this stupid game again.Nobody lives on those pieces of little rocks barely above the water. They should be treated the same as open water and all sovereign claims of anyone ignored. I think that deep down, all nations in that area understand this. This is why nobody brings up the issue of territorial water based on those rocks.

Is Beijingu2019s claim of expelling a US warship from the South China Sea credible?
Of course not. Unless you want to believe it. The US Navy goes where it wants to in international waters. So is one of its ships happen to sail from point A to point B and goes through international waters that a bully nation claims with no legal rights, so what?If they lie about that, what else would they lie about

Can the United States and its allies stand up to the Chinese military in the South China Sea? What can they do?
You mean .. to start a war? or "If there is a War?"The 'South China Sea' issue was there right after the war, it started with the '9 Dash Lines' and that was the RoC (Republic of China) not retreated to Taiwan, and PRC - China happens to have a similar claim. At that time, no dispute and in fact the Philippines still very much an American territory, Vietnam also French and China was RoC, not yet PRC.So, the claims had started like that, before any disputes. UNCLOS did not come to being until 1994, and does not have the rights over 'historical claims' before its existence, (otherwise, the USA has no claim over Hawaii and the UK no claim over the Falklands. Same ideas!!!)So, 'Yes' - disputes, 'No' invasions .. and islands? Other countries had started island building before China (nobody pays attentions to that, why?) If fact China has stated that it would have bi-lateral discussions with other nations over the disputes, promised 'no bullying' and requested 'outsiders' not to 'intervene'. Nothing wrong with that, right, at least before the 'conspiracy theories'..So, who is/are 'stirring up' ?'Starting a War?' ... 'No'.I think it is mainly publicity and demonizing China . . also, flashing 'muscles' and provoking. So, who is the aggressor? Really?. NB. Who has the rights over the islands is not my point, we can disagree over that and really, the countries are sorting that out themselves, my point is this: from China's point of view, it is would efensive' not 'aggressive'

Tectonics of the South China Sea
The South China Sea Basin is one of the largest marginal basins in Asia. South China Sea is located to the east of Vietnam, west of Philippines and the Luzon Strait, and north of Borneo. Tectonically, it is surrounded by the Indochina Block on the west, Philippines Sea plate on the east, Yangtze Block to the north. A subduction boundary exists between the Philippines Sea Plate and the Asian Plate. The formation of the South China Sea Basin was closely related with the collision between the Indian Plate and Eurasian Plates. The collision thickened the continental crust and changed the elevation of the topography from the Himalayan orogenic zone to the South China Sea, especially around the Tibetan Plateau. The location of the South China Sea makes it a product of several tectonic events. All the plates around the South China Sea Basin underwent clockwise rotation, subduction and experienced an extrusion process from the early Cenozoic to the Late Miocene. The geological history can be classified into five tectonic evolutionary stages. (1) rift system development (2) sea floor spreading, (3) subsidence of the South China Sea, (4) closure of the South China Sea Basin and (5) uplift of Taiwan.
