Yes, it's possible and very common... esp if you are very close to the station (or they have a very strong signal). You can make a simple AM radio receiver with nothing but a sensitive headphone or earphone, a length of wire to act as an antenna, and (believe it or not) a bad connection to something - one method is a piece of graphite pencil lead and an old double-edged razor blade - to act as a "rectifier". Any of the transistors in your speaker's amp will act as a rectifier too. The fact that your volume control is turned down does not matter. It really depends on you, I've used both of them. I liked Marshall earphone mode eq more. The headphones did not really provide the sound Marshall is known for. You should go for the earphones in my opinion you wo not regret it. Although keep in mind the build quality, it's average at best.
